How do you know you've got it right? When you have hooked your hook to the hook. You've only got two hooks, attaching your devices in any way other than hook to hook could be fatal. What could be clearer than "hook the hook to the hook"?

Well, maybe something along the lines of what he wrote earlier:

... the two hooks were to be hooked together.

Given that there are just two hooks around, there are two possibilities:

1. One hook is fixed and the other can be moved. Although there's only one hook that could be hooked to the hook, wouldn't it be clearer to write

Clip the movable hook to the fixed hook.

or something similar?

2. Both hooks are movable. In this case, there's a fundamental symmetry, which the writing should really reflect. So perhaps you should write something like:

Clip the two hooks together.

In both scenarios, I think it makes for clearer reading (and, perhaps, translatability) to avoid using `hook' as both verb and noun in the same sentence.

(Perhaps Gregory's posting was really just tongue in cheek; in any case, I think Carla was right to be bemused by `Hook the hook on the hook'.)

Best wishes,
Sandy
