Had it not been for the Black Death, we'd probably be speaking French,
but due to depopulation in England and the decimation of French-speaking
nobility, Anglo-Saxon speakers filled important legal, political, and
religious posts-thus ensuring our language would remain Germanic, with
the addition of a lot of French words to our vocabulary. And
remember-our English comes from Chaucer's London dialect, not the
dialects of the Gawain poet or other Middle English authors.

So, to those who love the English language, let's all raise our coffee
mugs in a toast to Bubonic Plague, bad sanitation, and the Black Death!
