Grumbling about HAT: Doc-to-Help

Let me preface this message: I am STUCK with Doc-to-Help, so please
don't recommend freeware, Flare, or anything else. (And also, if I
mention OS X, Fedora Core 2, or freeware, I get this "Bolshevik in the
Washroom" look.)

I'm building a modular system-which worked fine on the server. I copied
the files to my HD to build a HTML help system (to get around
Microsoft's oh-so-wise security update that disabled every shared .CHM
help system in the world <more grumbling> at least for those poor saps,
like me, who use XP). My source files are MS Word, and appear just
fine-the template is okay, the headings and styles are okay-but when I
attempt to build a HTML system, my topics disappear. . . Sometimes
reappear. . . Sometimes. . . Not that I can get another help authoring
system, but is there one that actually works seamlessly, or are they all
fraught with problems that happen for no apparent reason, other than
faulty (I can't post the adjective I want here) programming?

Please tell me I'm not alone in wanting to reboot my computer a la Alice
from Dilbert, or thinking about a shack, a typewriter, and Ned Lud.

In an ideal world, engineers would have to repair their own designs,
developers would have to use their own programs, and. . . um. . . I'm
thinking. . . haberdashers would have to wear their own hats. . .
