TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I usually tell people I write instruction manuals and create brochures. To
me, documentation sounds like something you need to get yourself into a
country or move a product across an international border. "Do you have
documentation?" is a common question for people crossing borders to do some
work. A lack of documentation can hold you up for days which happened to two
co-workers last week.

Subject: How we define ourselves
I've had friends, family, neighbors, and acquaintances, come up to me
and say, "So, you're a technical writer now, eh?"
They will squint and cock their heads while they're looking at me.
They're not quite sure what a technical writer does.
However, when I nod and say, yes, I'm doing documentation (which is
correct), they understand immediately.
This must have been discussed previously around here, but I'm throwing
my recent experience out there anyway.
