It is unrealistic to expect a nationally published highway map to contain
seasonal road closure information, especially for roads that only *may*
be closed based on conditions.

There are, however, "communications" lessons that can be learned.

Don't assume that someone who is technically adept will exercise
the common sense to use and verify data.

Don't depend on documentation when your eyes should tell you
there's something wrong.

Verify your data with experienced (or in this case, local) sources
of information.

Have a backup plan.

However, it wasn't clear whose map the couple used. The 2005-2007 state
highway map distributed by the Oregon Department of Transportation has a
warning in red print, inside a red box: "This route closed in winter." A
Rand-McNally map did not have a similar warning.
