Remember: the family stayed with the vehicle for at least 7 days. They
ran the car out of gas, they burned the tires to stay warm and they had
a 4 year old and a 7 month old. The wife was nursing both kids to keep
them alive.
It's always easy for the experts to point out that you should stay put
when lost BUT I doubt if I were in that situation feeling the
responsibility for my family and had NO indication that anyone was
looking for us, that I would have stayed. Many of us after all that
inactivity would have opted to DO SOMETHING. It's just human.

Which is impossible unless you know what kind of mistakes are going to
get you into serious trouble. Again, maybe that's the kind of advice
that would go well in the front of the map book.
Along with the same advice that's always given and never heeded: STAY
WITH YOUR VEHICLE.
