A compass only works if you know how to use it. It works best if you
have a map of the area. Then you can plot the coordinates of where you
think you are.

Another very small, very light, very cheap, very essential piece for the
car
kit -- a compass.

I live five miles from the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, thousands
of
wetland acres with curvy roads that very probably started their lives as
moose trails. It's a tempting shortcut from here to there but on a grey
day
that "shortcut" can take hours.

Of course I would stay with my vehicle -- but at least I would have a
good
idea where I was. Which would come in handy when I used the cell phone
to
call for help.
