Is there one of us who can write up a good case, for presentation to bean
counters, er, I mean Managers With Accounting Backgrounds, for the
bottom-line economic benefits of employing tech writers?

Easy.
"For every $50,000 Operations Manual you purchase, we will throw in one (1)
super-powered 1500 kW long-distance radio unit. Do not attempt to use the
unit without the manual; you will burn down your radio shack and the
mountain upon which it perches!"
I'm not being flip here. _We_ know what we can do for a company. The hard
job is to educate Management that sees us as overhead and window-dressing,
and "documentation" as something that sits on a shelf, in which "words on
paper" is good enough and anybody who can type is perceived as being able to
do the job.
We're getting into another topic. Do we want to branch into "Justifying
Technical Writers" or stay in the more detailed "Measuring TW Performance"?
