I often lift from the management consultants, who are paid considerably more
than I am, and label everything "DRAFT--FOR DISCUSSION ONLY." This way, I
show that I am ready, willing, and able to do my job and be part of The
Team. I also offer to test the product, even as it's being developed. The
engineers often appreciate my willingness to pitch in and help. Management
gets everything just as soon as it exists.

I am in a wonderful position because I am embedded with the developers.
I have access to any SME I want; after five years, they know that I will
come by their office -- often with little or no warning.

My favorite questions to ask are "the emperor has no clothes" questions,
where they are not allowed to tell me that this is the way it has always
been done, or similar excuses for doing things a certain way.

The three most valuable questions to ask when learning about software
are "Always?" "Never?" and "Huh?"
