Hi, folks, I'm stuck....

I am having trouble updating the page numbers in my table of contents.

What I have done so far:

1. From the Outline view: click Update TOC, then Update Page Numbers
Only. This provides me with a column of numbers corresponding to their
subjects as follows: 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, etc.

2. From the Outline view: click Update TOC, then Update Entire
Contents. This provides me with a similar column of numbers, but
they're not the same. Instead, the numbers are: 1, 2, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7,
8, 10, 11, etc.

The second set of numbers is correct.

Curiously, if the table currently shows the lower numbers, and I update
the entire table, the result gives me the higher numbers. If I then
update numbers only, the table keeps the (correct) higher numbers. If,
after I've updated only the numbers, I then update the entire table, the
table reverts to the (incorrect) lower numbers.

Once it updates (incorrectly) to the lower numbers, it doesn't matter
which command I use; the numbers stay at the lower numbers. The way to
regain the higher (correct) numbers is to follow an active link in the
TOC, which resets the numbers to the higher page numbers.

Once I've regained the higher numbers, I can then use the update page
numbers only command, and the higher numbers will remain. At that
point, I've reached a loop....

I'm baffled. Any ideas?

I am using Microsoft Office Word 2003 on a PC.

Thanks very much!
