Re: Page Numbers in TOC
2. From the Outline view: click Update TOC, then Update Entire
Contents. This provides me with a similar column of numbers, but
they're not the same. Instead, the numbers are: 1, 2, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7,
8, 10, 11, etc.
The second set of numbers is correct.
I'm baffled. Any ideas?
I am using Microsoft Office Word 2003 on a PC.
Disclaimer: I use Word 2000, NOT 2003.
Dunno if this will help in any way, but: why Outline view and not
Print Layout view?
Second shot in the dark: Was this document EVER edited in Word 97?
Long shot, which will probably miss by a wide margin, but

"The [TOC] generator actually generates the page numbers in the TOC by
inserting a hidden bookmark at every Heading in the document. In the
TOC itself, Word 97 generates a hyperlinked PAGEREF field for each
page number, referencing the appropriate heading (if you click on the
page number it takes you to the Heading). In Word 2000 it generates a
more complex hyperlinked field, which allows you to click on the text
in the TOC to go to the referenced Heading.
Either way, you can see these hyperlink fields by right-clicking any
page number and selecting "Toggle Field Codes".You can see the hidden
bookmarks by selecting any Heading in the document, selecting
Insert>Bookmark, and ticking the "Show Hidden Bookmarks" checkbox.The
hidden bookmark applied to the heading you are in will be selected in
the dialog, and its name will tally with that in the relevant field in
the TOC itself.
When you update the TOC (by selecting it, pressing F9, and choosing
"Update entire Table"), all the hidden bookmarks that have been
applied to the Headings are deleted and recreated – you can see that
their names have changed, if you look. However, prior to Word 97, the
hidden bookmarks were not deleted when you regenerated the TOC;
instead, a new set of bookmarks was created each time;so you could
very quickly end up with hundreds of redundant bookmarks, leading to a
huge increase in file size and, frequently, to document corruption.

What struck me about this is that if there were TWO different sets of
hidden bookmarks, perhaps left over from when someone updated the TOC
in Word 97, then this weird behavior you describe might make sense.
Aw, come on, stop rolling your eyes! :-) I'm guessing, and you know it!

describes something else, but you might want to try the TOC update
macro in there - might possibly help you...? Does your TOC just barely
flow over onto a new page? Maybe adding a Page Break after your TOC
field would help keep your page count (and numbering) constant, and
prevent constant repagination.
HTH. Word is extremely frustrating when it misbehaves (which is very often) :-/
