If I was the person you reported to and my career along with the 25
million dollars we've invested in the development of the product was
on the line, this type of dice-throwing is not acceptable.
You need to quantify what you do so you can:
1) perform the same process over and over again
with the same reproducible results.
and
2) be able to identify when a change to your process
will have identifiable results.
As your manager, I need to be able to come to you and say "Change of
plan...the GUI is late, but the Single Sign-On feature is ahead of
schedule. Let me know by this afternoon what impacts this change is
going to have so I can report it to the manager's status conference call."
