I have a 5-page resume that covers 24 years and three major career shifts. I
also have five 2- to 3-page resumes that focus on specific skill sets. I
hardly ever use them, because despite that supposed truth of 2-page resumes,
most headhunters and recruiters cannot deal with functional resumes, and
demand you rewrite it to be chronological and list all the companies (turned
out to be an advantage since I've worked for three of the largest financial
services organizations in the US). I've never copied and pasted a job
description since I tend to carve out a niche that is unique to my skill
sets and the organizations I work for. I have left a CD for review once, and
despite several calls and offers to come and pick it up, I never saw it
again. Now I have an online collection of portfolio items., and send links
when I know there's serious interest. I write targeted cover letters that
generate more interest than the resume only when I blind post.
Obviously everyone's experience is different, but since moving to technical
communication and knowledge management, I have never been on the bench more
than two days, and had only one person comment on resume length.
Never take a rule about jobhunting as an absolute truth--there's always
somebody who can debunk it for you. ;-)
