In the industries I've worked (aerospace, semiconductors, biotech,
telecon) most tech writers start out as something else (design, test or service engineers, pilots or mechanics, biologists, laboratory
techs, physicists, etc.), In 15 years I think I can count the number of successful (as in, they're still working in the field after the dot-bomb housecleaning) writers I've known who started out as new grads with English or journalism degrees on one hand, and I've still yet to receive a single resume from a candidate with a
degree in technical communications.

Is there a new generation of tech writers? When I go to Boston STC meetings,
almost everyone seems to be in my age range (40 and up).
