I agree. I studied liberal arts in school; chemistry, actually, though I didn't know exactly what I would be doing when I left. Computers snuck up on me. I think I was one of two people in my graduating class who kinda knew we'd go into something having to do with computers. At the time, my school didn't have a computer science department.

In school I learned to be flexible, curious, intelligent, and responsible. Most everything else I was exposed to is either out of date or wrong, and who cares? I can look up facts in a book; it's harder to look up how to be hard-working, reliable, and ready to learn things quickly.

In the industries I've worked (aerospace, semiconductors, biotech,

techs, physicists, etc.), In 15 years I think I can count the number of successful (as in, they're still working in the field after the dot-bomb housecleaning) writers I've known who started out as new grads with English or journalism degrees on one hand, and I've still yet to receive a single resume from a candidate with a
degree in technical communications.

Is there a new generation of tech writers? When I go to Boston STC meetings,
almost everyone seems to be in my age range (40 and up).
