I've found that .chm files run afoul of a recent (well, within the past
year) MS security update, because .chm files can contain executable
code. There is a workaround, but for those of us without admin level on
our boxes at work, it's not feasible. Also, HTML Help 2.0 support
doesn't exist in Vista (or so I think-I'm not entirely certain), which
leads me to think Help 2.0 is going the way of WinHelp.
Microsoft has a .mht format for sending encapsulated html files via
email, but I. . . Well, I hate it. The layout tends to corrupt when
opened.
At this point, I can't think of a file format better than .pdf for
compatibility across OS X, XP, Vista, and Linux, despite its drawbacks.
Also, you seem to have all the software you need, and. . . Well, now
that pdf will be an ISO standard, do you think it may become the
de-facto ebook format? It certainly seems poised for that.
