TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
So...since we both have stacks of great cover letters written using a
variety of methods, I believe it's safe to say that the key factor is they
tell the truth no matter who or how they are created.

I don't agree. A letter of recomendation, just like a resume, is not a
writing test. It is what it is.
The best letter I have in my portfolio is from a manager who's first
language was Russian, a VERY intelligent guy (he's now a VP at Merrill
Lynch's "Center for Innovation and Creative Excellence") and the grammar
sounds like English is his second language, though not TOO bad. However, it
is the most impressive recommendation I've ever seen from anyone.
My second best is from a manager who was Lebonese and his first language was
French. Again, some odd phrasing, and I wouldn't change a word.
