I usually stay out of the certification debate, but decided to share my
son's story. He began programming at the age of 7, and got his first
programming job when he was 19. At 23, with four years of programming
under his belt, he became the sole programmer for a thrift store. (Yes,
even thrift stores need computers).

One day, he was talking to his manager about a new program the manager
wanted. As the manager was pontificating on the use of bell curves,
Daryl looked very confused. The manager said, "You know, bell curves.
How did you ever get out of college without knowing about bell curves?"
He mumbled a reply, but thought, "By not attending to begin with?"

By the way, that job also required a college degree. Daryl had 60
college credits by the time he was 18, and dropped out "for a while."
He is now 28, and the while isn't over yet.
