Maybe lists are a slight return of the once-vaunted "Free education for
everyone who wants it." I like the parallels, but of course you have to
find the right list at the right level, or risk the consequences of
being out of step with the sturm und drang of the list members.
With the internet becoming ever more segmented by spinoffs and splinters
of lists and alternatives, it is hard to find the right list at the
right level. But it is even harder to ensure that a simple answer will
be predictably forthcoming when all levels of interest are meeting in
one list. Reconsider your earlier classroom analogy (serious academic
