I learned about TeX when I was working in a UNIX shpo and learning 
nrof/troff, etc.

It is my understanding the Knuth not only looked at each sentence in a 
paragraph but the entire paregraph.

I believe the he built into TeX the requirement that no more that two lines 
could have a hyphen at the end.

Something about readability and 'standard.

I never had the opportunity to deliberately look into TeX because I never 
got involved in 'typography' as a skillset.

However, I have tried to address that specific 'requirement in the writing 
that I have done, even to the extent of changing my writing habit to avoid 
too manyhpyhens.
