I understand your frustration. The documentation on
XML, even the best like w3schools, is disturbingly out
of touch. It's very rarely correlated to a task, so
presents you with a series of abstractions you're
supposed to absorb.

It was the same way with HTML, which was much simpler,
but people mystified it as usual. These experiences
staying up for hours reading cryptic and often wrong
documentation converted me to the wisdom of technical
writing.

Again, the most productive thing we can do here is
compile links/resources for learning XML. Here's a
start, posted already but still valid.
