I think you can use the LISTNUM field to create a second level. Rather than using the SEQ field, you'd use the LISTNUM field in all places. But you'd have to double your autocorrect entries. Something like this.
1] = first level, start at 1
N] = first level, continue
a] = second level, start at 1
n] = second level, continue
The Help for the LISTNUM field, or the options presented in the Insert > Field dialog box should give you the details you need to build the fields.
