I've successfully used David Knopf's workaround for autonumbered lists in
Word (and I heartily recommend it for anyone who is struggling with this
problem. It's here: http://www.knopf.com/tips/autonumber.html.)
However, I've got to create a second level:

works.
a. Here's what I've got to do now, numbered with lc letters.
I tried changing different variables in Knopf's solution, with no success.
Has anyone figured out how to create disaster-proof second-level
autonumbering in Word?
