TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've gotten several responses about why I should not need to know about
production because a writer shouldn't have to do that stuff, or the
production house should tell me what is needed, etc. etc. etc.
It seems I wasn't clear enough about the reason for my request. Let me
isolate it here:
"I need to know about production steps so I can estimate times and so I
can help my manager decide what to insist that the manufacturer handle."
To clarify: I am in the unusual, irregular position of needing to do an
estimated production schedule for these two purposes:
1) Helping my manager demonstrate to the product manufacturer the
urgency of getting the process going.
2) Helping my manager isolate the tasks on which our company can be most
productive.
Agreed, this may not the way things should be. It is, however, the way
things are in my job right now.
I ordered some books on graphics production that should arrive later
today, and will consult them to get some kind of clue.
