Not seeing where it is that your 'SME' as to the insensitivity is coming
from. I took that post to be quite sensitively put. I thought it was a
serious question, too, one that I myself wonder about. 'How does that person
do it?' is the question in my mind....
...I agree that it is truly amazing what people with disabilities are able
to do at times.

Thanks Jim,
I firmly believe that the more we understand the challenges confronting
people with disabilities, the better we will be as co-workers, managers,
employers, friends, neighbors, etc. To many of us look the other way, or do
what "we think" is best for them (you know...those people who aren't like
us). Instead, we should ask the questions, find out what is needed or
wanted.
As I told Jodie, when I lived in Alaska, I ran a computer store and one of
our customers was an elderly gentleman who wanted to write his memoirs. He
had terrible eyesight brought on by long hours working outside in the winter
before Polaroid sunglasses and UV protection. We configured a computer
system for him that used a large screen projection television for the
monitor. It was so much fun to watch him finally be able to see what he was
writing. He's gone now, but his stories are now part of the University of
Alaska Museum archives.
I asked him what he needed and he said "to be able to see the words." If I
didn't ask, he would never have been able to see the words and his story
would have been lost forever. As it stands, his story lives forever.
So, ask the questions. After all, that's what our business is based
on...asking questions.
