Yes, and I disagree with all of them to some degree. I
don't know what usage is right, but I usually know
what I prefer. The problem is figuring out what
readers would prefer or more readily understand. A few
years ago, I traded my M-W for an older American
Heritage, and I think I got the better end of the
deal.
It might be best to choke a camel, and determine the
usage that you will use by listening to how educated
people in your field use English, and you could do
that while drinking your martini and smoking a
cigarette.
