Bonnie raises a good point. I putzed around with your situation some
more. Sure enough when I customize the outline numbering so it doesn't
include a trailing colon (I have to type it in) the x-ref dialog box
shows that space and all is well in the x-ref that's created.
That made me look in the More area of the Customize Outline Number
dialog box. The Follow Number With list is: Nothing, Space, or Tab
Character. That's where you would have wanted to see your colon. Word
would have known about it then, and could have omitted it from x-refs.
But there's no way to customize what goes in there, even using VBA.
That took me back to the idea of using a caption to number the chapter
and appendix titles.
And that sort of works the way you want it to. I.E. you can add a colon
each time you insert a caption to number a title, and the colon doesn't
appear in the x-ref. It's just that you have to select Chapter or
Appendix in the For Reference Type list in the x-ref dialog box.
Either way, though, you have to enter that colon each time you number a
title. Either in the title itself or in the caption text.
