I've also used margins to include alternate means of
executing the command in question. So the text might
standardize on a keystroke combination, while the
margin note might include a button icon as well as a
menu option.
To explain this setup, the first chapter includes a
note on this convention; i.e. that there are several
ways of doing things, only one of which is described
(consistently) in the text, but the alternatives are
on the margin.
