Agree that politics should not be a determining factor in hiring someone. Think we've reached general consensus on this.
Perhaps anon can reply to clear up some questions or to share outcome - there's been a lot of speculation about this.
In the absence of further details, one clear point is that the candidate expressed strong political opinions during an interview - albeit an informal lunch interview. It was also clear from the original post that the team backed off from engaging the candidate (avoiding the Al vs. Ann clash). That's why I'd suggested in an earlier post that this behavior should have been questioned at that time (during interview) or in a follow-up conversation.
Perhaps the candidate can work well with others of differing political views. Perhaps the topic discussed was a hot button one for the candidate (most of us have them) and not typical behavior. Perhaps the candidate made assumptions & would react differently after understanding others in group don't share his viewpoint.
If this is a good candidate in a sea of lesser candidates - I'd think it's worth anon's time to follow up & better understand what can be expected from the candidate. If after this, anon decides to pass on the candidate - it won't be because of political views but because of anticipated unprofessional behavior. That's fair.
