The initial questions (edited) posed were:

   1.

      Is it ethical to deny employment to a person based on his/her political views? 
          

   2.

      Is a new person worth the possible disruption to the team?

The consensus of the group is that the answer to the first question is No.

The consensus of the group is that the answer to the second question is 
Maybe.

A legitimate concern about the insularity and "freshness" of the group 
was raised. Since the Original Poster is the group manager and hired all 
the people in the group, he or she knows them and their situation far 
better than we do. Suffice it to say that, if they have been following 
the conversation, they probably have the information needed to make a 
decision.

My vote is to lay off the topic for now and hope we are apprised of the 
outcome.
