This is pretty much SOP for W2 agency work. The client's
contract is with the agency, not the employee, and even if
it is for a specified term, if the person the agency sends
doesn't work out the client calls the agency and tells it to
send someone else instead.
For direct 1099 contracts between client contractor-
worker, most contracts I have been involved with, both
as client and contractor, specify a 30-day notice; either
party terminating the contract must give 30 days or pay
the other party 30 days at the contract rate in lieu of
notice.
