TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
PNGs are lossless, but do not support CYMK. The format was designed for the
Web as a replacement for GIFs with an extended color palette.
JPGs are lossy and support both RGB and CYMK and were designed for
continuous tone (photographs) images.
If you are going to output both printed and web-based material, use JPGs. If
you are only producing web-base material, use either of them. However, if
you do use JPGs, remember to keep your source file separate from your final
output, 'cause every time you do something to a JPG and save it back to the
source, you loose quality.
I personally convert all my JPGs to TIFF or Photoshop files, do whatever
manipulation is necessary, then convert back to JPGs for insertion in the
documents. That way, my master file doesn't get destroyed when I have to do
the umpteenth makeover due to an undocumented engineering change two days
before deadline.
And people wonder why a lot of technical writers have high blood
pressure.....
