RE: What is the best term to use?

The system that I currently deal with refers to those tabs as "Applets,"
which may be an appropriate term in this case.  The term "applet" generally
applies to mini-applications within applications.  I wouldn't call every tab
an applet; for example, the tabs in an options menu are tabs because they
only offer a screen for making changes to preferences but no actual
application functionality, like database operations.  If the tabs have
specific sets of operational functions and they are parts of a larger
application, then, I think, they are "applets."
