Hey Jon,

Thanks much for the response. I haven't gotten many responses to this
message, for some odd reason.

I'm not sure it's a font issue, although I suppose it could be. The
reason that I don't think it is one is that the same PDF files used in a
previous version of the document worked just fine: I got PDF files from
the chapter and all of the images came out just fine. This time, all but
one of them were missing the callout numbers. The one that still
contained the callout numbers later had them missing, as well. The only
solution I found that was acceptable was to manually place solid white
circles drawn with Frame's drawing tools over top of the callouts in the
Frame file and then place a new callout number, created with the Text
Line tool, over top of that. I then selected all within the anchored
frame and grouped them together to preserve the placement. I realize how
much of a kludge job this is, but I tried to use TIFF files instead and
the quality REALLY sucked. Since these PDF files worked fine before and
then stopped working, I am really perplexed about it all.

In light of the above, I'm guessing that the only problem with your
proposed cause is that the fonts SHOULD be there since the images worked
fine in a previous version of this chapter. As an experiment to see if
there might have been some issue with a certain image causing all of the
others to be thrown off, I distilled a single page a couple of times,
with a couple of different pages, all with the same result: missing
callout numbers.

I plan on sending Adobe a message and hope for some insight from
them.

Thanks again, Jon and Darren, for the assistance!

Sam:

Sounds like a font issue. There was a weird bug where some Asian fonts
would cause this to happen, and by removing all Asian fonts, deleting
the FNTCACHE.DAT file, rebooting twice, then adding back fonts one by
one, you could determine what font is the problem.

What fonts were used in the PDFs? Any chance they aren't embedded and
also not on your system? FrameMaker will complain if the font is
missing in FM text, but it won't do anything if a font is missing in an
imported PDF.

All,

I have some PDF files of drawings with callouts on them. These files
are inserted by reference into a chapter in Frame 7.2 (on Win XP). So
far, so good. When I try to make a PDF of the chapter, the callout
numbers on the drawings disappear. The callout arrows and circles are
still there, but the numbers are gone. Any ideas on what's happening?

Thanks much in advance!
