TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Check out your local STC chapter's jobsite. Depending on where you live, these jobsites can have a dozen or more temporary, contract positions posted -- often they are parttime, and sometimes they will let you telecommute. Once you have managed to land one of these (and do a great job), you typically get more.
I work fulltime and can count on one or two of these additional projects a year. Because they offer no benefits, they typically pay surprisingly well.

Subject: Financial crunch - need advice
Hello,
I have an informal poll for you...
While my husband and I are both gainfully employed, our salaries are no longer covering our bills and we're facing a major financial crunch right now that could lead to some permanent damage (repossession,
bankruptcy) unless we take corrective action. Panic has already set in.
I need to bring in more money and am considering ways to do so without selling Tupperware and the like. I'm a writer with graphic art experience and wondered how I can parlay that into some kind of part-time thing I can do after work and on weekends.
I wondered if anyone on the list has been able to use their writing abilities to moonlight and wouldn't mind giving some advice.
