Other factors - Localization, audience and product.

Software - many companies seem to be more on the "sweatshop" approach
to documentation. Contractors churning out fast docs for localization
drops. Solution? Increase your value to these companies with Project
Management skills, Training, Instructional Design, Multimedia, API/SDK
documentation, etc.

Hardware - Some of the same problems exist here as they do with
software. Solution? Use the same approaches. Also, try to align with
"higher end" manufacturers with engineering and marketing facilities
located in your area.

Financial Institutions - Try as they might? Federal regs. and Sox
don't make Offshoring their Instructional Design all that realistic.
However, they are Glacial institutions that love outsourcing. Hook in
as a consultant and you'll have a healthy gig.

In essence, get creative in your approach and think outside the usual
role of Technical Writer/Doc Specialist. It's a changing world and
there's a whole batch of idealistic college grads breaching the gates.
