TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've never interviewed game developers, but I'm pretty sure that their resumes don't - and won't - be titled, "Technical Communicator."
Many of the new instructional applications (especially simulations) are done with game engines. Although Flash is generally seen as an animation software, if you rightclick most any game on the Internet, you will see that it was programmed in Flash. On the other hand, I use the same (game) programming to produce physics and engineering simulations. See http://imrl.usu.edu/NingProject/module05.html In one project, I produced 80 hours of step-by-step video and animated instructions on how to pack a nuclear weapons parachute . . . and my resume is titled "Technical Communicator."
That's why I say you need to know what's going on on the fringes of the profession. Eventually much of what is happening there will be a part of the main stream. Game development technologies will be an important part of instruction one day.
