Hi, Lin:
If all other autonumbered items that follow the text inset are
incorrect including the table, it's likely that the text flow is
broken near the inset. Have you tried selecting all in flow and
viewing in 25% view, to see that the selection is continuous
throughout the file?
If only the table is incorrect (ie, all other autonumbered items
following the inset are correct), then it may be possible that the
table is somehow disconnected from the flow, perhaps by being in a
text frame in a graphic frame.
Another possibility that you mentioned having checked may be extra
tricky; if there's a tiny blank paragraph that's autonumbered in the
same series, it's possible to overlook its presence, and just see its
effect - resetting the table number.
Have you tried selecting the inset and perhaps a paragraph or two
before and after it, and cutting to the clipboard, to see if the table
number is corrected? That could indicate that the problem is located
somewhere in the stuff on the clipboard.
HTH
Regards,
Peter
