Dan is correct.

I always point to a link and look to see where Firefox says it is going 
before clicking it.  I mistrust HTML messages more than text messages 
but hover-and-eyeball all links.

There ARE Add-ons for Thunderbird (my primary mail client), but so far 
they do not appear to be any better than my "by hand" method.
