It is a technical term, and versions of it exist in various programming environments. The user sees a pair of lists (that might be called "available" and "chosen"), and gets to move items from one list to the other.

There is no reason for the user to know what the programmer calls the thing, but most programmers writing documentation will naturally use that word.

As for the word itself, I agree. Wait until you have to listen to a PHB talking about how he wants to hire someone who knows picklist, but pronounces it "picks knowslist."

Put the word in your collection of reasons that tech writers are needed.
