Thanks for the many helpful replies (most of which came to me directly).

Answers ranged from simply "Times New Roman 10 point is too small; I use

12 pt" to a wonderful explanation of the relationship between point size

and line length.

My next question: Lots of people don't use TNR any more. If you are
writing a doc that will be published in pdf format, intended to be
printed on client's laser printers, what typeface and point size do you
use for body text?

Does anyone use Optima for body text? That's in another doc I'll be
working on - Optima 11.5 for text. Looks awfully big to me (for a 5"
text column).
