At one time, being gay or lesbian, or even having someone
who was in your family, was enough to disqualify for certain
levels of clearance, the theory being that even if you could
not be blackmailed, the possibility that threats to expose
things about someone close enough to you that you might
be influenced to protect them could be enough.
