It varies with your specific "compartment" and what you
were working on. My clearance ended when I left the
associated employer in 1991. I was required to submit
a "notice of planned foreign travel" to the security office
before traveling anywhere out of the US, and was issued
a wallet-sized card with a list of countries I wasn't allowed
to travel to without an escort for the next 10 years. By
the time my restricted list expired in 2001, half the
countries on it no longer existed.

There are still certain restrictions on the level of detail
I can go into when discussing what I worked on that
remain in effect "until notified otherwise."

I've only been out of the country once since 2001.
I have to admit that I did sort of miss that guy in the
suit. Most of them are bilingual, and some of them
are pretty good at haggling with street vendors in
the countries they're assigned to.
