I was told "informally" that the 2002 foreclosure on my certified organic farm would be a stopper to application for a security clearance. I also had a rotten repayment history whilst dragging myself back up from homelessness and welfare after violence and abandonment by my spouse. Go figure; credit checks by potential employers still seem to make interest evaporate. Never mind that a job would make it a lot easier to pay the two or three remaining debtors. I am reminded of the beginning of my career during the rotten-economy years of the first gas crisis (1973), where the excuse was either "not enough experience" or "overqualified".

If they don't want to hire me, they'll come up with an excuse. They probably won't share the real reason, whatever it is. I can't worry about those. I am a superstar at what I do, I'm a good employee, and if they aren't smart enough to grab me while the grabbing is good then they probably deserve to muddle along without me. There are too many good matches out there to waste time worrying about any that don't work.

If a job seems otherwise attractive, I would apply and talk about the security clearance, and be candid about the financial history that might or might not hinder it.
