One very important thing to know: InDesign is not really an authoring tool
in the sense that Frame or Word is. I've had to get plug-ins to support
decent styling/ease-of-use for xrefs and for making InDesign automatically
add pages/flow new text to them.

So, be sure to check-out the officially sanctioned list of plug-ins:
http://indesign.pluginsworld.com/plugins/index.php?directory=adobe&software=
indesign.

It does depend on which version of InDesign you're using. You indicated
CS3 (InDesign 5.0.x -- yes, the InDesign version numbers do not match the
Creative Suite version numbers; sigh), which is what I have. I do know
that CS4 provides some level of support for both the items I mentioned, but
the plugin prices ($139, $75) are much cheaper than the upgrade from CS3 to
CS4 (which for my Design Standard edition runs $499). But if I keep adding
plugins, that point will be moot...
