John,

Now you're talking master pages (which InDesign fully supports) and
cross-references (which the InDesign that comes with CS3 does not support),
plus better thread/flow/page management (which again, InDesign w/CS3 isn't
so good at).

I have CS3, and have run into these issues just recently. Turns out that
some of this is better supported in CS4, but not to the extent that
FrameMaker makes it simple to do.

I've just purchased two plug-ins that remedy the situation:
Cross-References PRO, http://www.dtptools.com/product.asp?id=crin, which
I've easily used (it has a free 30-day trial) and InFlow,
http://indesign.pluginsworld.com/plugins/adobe/199/em-software-inc/inflow.ht
ml, which I haven't tried but looked worth the $75 risk.

(I believe you're on the STC LW listserv, and on Friday I just posted
questions around these very issues.)
-Monique
