I always put in a section titled "About This Document" with various subsections.  One of the subsections is "Typographical Conventions" where I explain things the reader may need to know about the fonts and layouts, like the differences between 'notes' and 'warnings.'  One subjection gives "Graphical Conventions" where I explain things about the illustrations, like how callouts on the screen captures are related to explanatory notes.

I wouldn't use the word "colophon."  Some people will confuse it with anatomical terms and it could become the butt of bad jokes.   :-)
