The technique I learned for avoiding popped Ps and hissed Ss was to hold
the mike to the side of your mouth instead of directly in front of it.
That also avoids any other explosive-type noises when you exhale.

One other nasty situation I ran into once was a person who was suing a
microphone, but who was apparently accustomed to addressing large
audiences without the benefit of a microphone. She pretty much blasted
everybody right off to the moon.
