I'm hoping that I will be able to retire before I am. To date I've managed to
maintain some measure of direct, face-to-face relationship with everyone I've
managed, even those half a world away. That's probably the thing that has helped
me avoid becoming the kind of manager who can think of subordinates as
interchangable cogs that can be shuffled or jettisoned without a second thought.
