Make sure that "Picture placeholders" in the View options (Tools >
Options > View) is not checked. I did that once because I was using a
slow machine and then I forgot to turn the view pictures back on. I
couldn't figure out where my picture went. :-) The image should
still be viewable in Print Preview and in the printout, though.
